Sleepy Time Thought 3/24/2012
The Santorum Surge strikes again!!! But not really. Even with his win in Louisiana, Santorum is not faring well against Romney who has slightly more than double the delegates. However, Santorum and Gingrich, kept afloat but their billionaire backers, will continue to be a thorn in Romney’s side possibly all the way to the convention. There is literally no upside for the GOP in all of this. Mitt Romney was already a weak nominee to begin with and the campaign slog is taking its toll. His continued need to make public appearances is damaging him more than anything the Obama campaign could come up with. Instead of being able to focus on attacking the president, Romney is forced to fend off the pointed attacks of his own party while having to continue to feed red meat to the crazed base. Contrary to the “Etch-a-Sketch” gaffe to end all gaffes, the hard right turn the nominees have to make win the primaries will not be forgotten come election time.
A note on the primaries: There’s a reason the nominees have to tack so hard to the right. The primaries are infested with religious zealots who do not have the best interest of the country at heart. For years, there has been a concerted effort to control this aspect of the GOP for the purpose of forcing the party to the far right and to embrace radical social stances that are completely out of step with the majority of Americans. And it’s worked beautifully. The party has been pulled by the nose into an increasingly extremist direction and has pulled the country with it. The results are what we have seen this year: an all out assault on women’s rights, women’s health, despicable racism and homophobia and an erosion of the separation of church and state.
The upside (if you can call it that) is that the further off the deep end they go, the harder it is to convince independents and moderates to go along with it. Add to that the growing percentage of minorities in this country that the GOP has spent decades insulting and demonizing with the fact that the older generation of hateful conservatives are dying off and you have a party that has painted itself into an ever shrinking corner. Hate, rage and greed will be unable to sustain the right for much longer and when the collapse of the GOP comes, it will be epic. We’re only watching the first stages of it now.
Sleep tight you filthy liberal scum!
